Summer is here! Catching fireflies, slip-n-sliding in the backyard, water skiing on the river, learning about Jesus at VBS, wading in cold mountain creeks, camping out under the stars, searching for the perfect shell, laughing with friends, and simply being loved as part of a family…these are just a few of our summer childhood memories. We are blessed to have fond memories of not only our summers but of other seasons as well. We can’t imagine growing up without our families and memories made.
The reality is that there are children around this globe that do not have families to make these kinds of memories with…. In fact, there are 147 million orphans worldwide. That is 147 million kids without a mom or dad to tuck them in at night.
When we first became aware of that number, we felt saddened and somewhat helpless. What could we do? In 2006 when Ben visited an orphanage in Russia and last summer when Jenn ministered to girls in an Guyanese orphanage the statistic became more than just numbers to glance over. The numbers became real children and our hearts forever changed. The question changed from “What can we do?” to “What can God do through us?”
In James 1:27 it says, “Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.”
So we started praying about how God would want us to respond to this burden. Although there are many ways to take care of orphans, we feel that He is leading us to bring one of these 147 million into our home. Specifically, our hearts are turning toward Colombia, South America. There are currently 577,000 orphans waiting for a forever family in Colombia. A lot of the children end up on the street in a life of crime or trafficked when they age out of the orphanages. We are praying that God will match our family with a girl or boy aged 5 or younger.
We absolutely realize that this is an impossible journey to take without the Father. We also know that He urges us to lean on one another through this journey of life. If you feel led to join with us on this journey, please pray. Please pray for the emotional, physical, financial and spiritual challenges that lie ahead for our family. Also pray that God would protect our new son or daughter that is waiting in Colombia. Our hearts already ache to be united with our precious child.
The cost of internationally adopting a child from Colombia is estimated to be around $28,000. We are actively seeking ways to raise this money. If you have a fundraising idea or would like to donate, we would love to hear from you.
Thank you in advance for your love and support. We are just in the beginning stages of this adoption process. It may take 24 months or more until we are able to bring our child home. Lydia and Jay are already praying for their new brother or sister. We hope to keep you posted along the way.
